Discover Ebony And Ivory Coffee

I first stumbled into Ebony And Ivory Coffee on a rainy afternoon while driving through 676 Woodland Square Loop SE a105, Lacey, WA 98503, United States, and it instantly felt like the kind of neighborhood diner you want to keep to yourself-but also can’t help telling everyone about. Tucked into Woodland Square Loop, this cozy coffee spot blends the warmth of a classic café with the polish of a modern espresso bar. The aroma of freshly ground beans hits you before you even reach the counter, and that’s usually a good sign.

As someone who has spent years exploring independent coffee houses across Washington, I pay attention to sourcing, brewing methods, and consistency. Here, the baristas walk you through their process without any pretense. They use precision scales, time their espresso shots carefully-usually around 25 to 30 seconds-and calibrate their grinders throughout the day. According to the National Coffee Association, proper extraction time and grind size significantly affect flavor balance, and it shows in every cup served here. The espresso has a rich crema, balanced acidity, and none of that bitter aftertaste that comes from over-extraction.

The menu is thoughtful without being overwhelming. You’ll find the staples-lattes, cappuccinos, Americanos-but also rotating seasonal drinks and specialty blends. On my last visit, I tried a honey cinnamon latte that tasted layered and smooth rather than overly sweet. They also offer dairy alternatives like oat and almond milk, which is essential these days, especially as more customers look for plant-based options. Research from the Specialty Coffee Association highlights that consumer demand for alternative milk options continues to grow annually, and this place clearly keeps up with industry trends.

Food matters just as much as coffee in a good diner. Their breakfast sandwiches are made fresh, not microwaved, and the pastries come from local bakeries in the Lacey area. I ordered a toasted bagel with cream cheese and paired it with a drip coffee brewed using a pour-over method. The barista explained that pour-over allows better control over water temperature-ideally between 195°F and 205°F, as recommended by the Specialty Coffee Association-which helps bring out nuanced flavors in single-origin beans. That level of attention tells you this isn’t just another quick-stop café.

Customer reviews around town often mention the welcoming vibe, and I completely agree. It’s not just about caffeine here; it’s about community. I watched a small business owner hold a casual meeting in the corner, while a group of students worked quietly near the window. The layout encourages both conversation and focus, which isn’t easy to achieve. Soft lighting, comfortable seating, and steady Wi-Fi make it a practical choice for remote workers or study sessions.

From a health and quality standpoint, coffee itself has been widely studied. Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health reports that moderate coffee consumption may support heart health and cognitive function when consumed responsibly. Of course, moderation is key, and individual tolerance varies. While Ebony And Ivory Coffee doesn’t market itself as a health café, the quality of ingredients and careful preparation add to the overall experience of drinking coffee that feels intentional rather than rushed.

Another thing worth noting is consistency. I’ve visited at different times-early morning rush and late afternoon lull-and the service remains steady. Drinks come out at the right temperature, foam texture is silky rather than bubbly, and the staff double-check orders before handing them off. In my experience, that level of reliability separates a good coffee shop from a great one.

If there’s any limitation, it’s that seating can fill up quickly during peak hours, especially on weekends. However, that’s often the mark of a well-loved local spot. Parking around Woodland Square is generally convenient, but arriving a bit earlier helps secure a comfortable seat.

Overall, this Lacey location offers more than just a caffeine fix. Between its carefully curated menu, knowledgeable staff, and steady stream of positive reviews, it stands out as a dependable destination for espresso drinks, breakfast bites, and casual meetups. Whether you’re a serious coffee enthusiast who cares about extraction ratios or simply someone looking for a relaxed diner-style café to unwind, this place delivers with confidence and character.

  • Had a great experience here! The staff was very busy but still friendly and quick with our orders. Matcha was ceremonial grade and absolutely delicious. I really enjoyed the outdoor seating!

  • Suuuper friendly, great energy in their staff, zero attitude <3 Great coffee options, absolutely delicious coffe! Plus they also have *fun* drink options too if you know what I mean … I understand loving coffee but it’s ok every once in a while to untwist your knickers and embrace the world of more fanciful caffeinated concocotions … So they have a rotating menu of new things they’ve come up with as well as all the classics …. We tried the “espresso flight” with a latte, doppio con panna, caramel macchiato and cold brew — for 15$ enough caffeine for two normal people — and a couple of their signature iced coffees — very good, bright, medium roasty. Nice selection of chais and teas also. Not a huge fan of their central seating area because it’s all space and hard surfaces but there is also adorable window seating, a generous peaceful outdoor patio, a back room with soft lighting and an electric fireplaces (your group can rent it!) and an annex next door that’s sometimes open with tall ceilings, tons of tables and natural light …

  • Amazing! Only thing wrong is that I don't live closer. Best coffee I've ever had and that's saying a lot seeing as i consider myself a coffee snob. We had the flights and even their non coffee drinks were amazing. Huge place, plenty of seating, beautiful inside. Will Definitely be returning as much as possible.

  • Good place to have a coffee but my mocha was a couple of dollars more than the same drink at Starbucks. I would stop by again, but only if I was in the vacinity

  • I absolutely love Ebony and Ivory! It’s a gorgeous café with an aesthetic that makes you fall in love. Every drink and dessert looks like it belongs in a magazine—and tastes just as good. It’s the kind of place you’ll want to visit again and again.

  • My sister and I were in the area and needed some caffeine. We found this CUTE coffee shop and we are so glad we did! We both tried something new, though it was very hard not getting the strawberry matcha because it looked delicious! We both got holiday drinks. Mine was a smokey one? And hers was a peppermint. Both were so good! We will be back. Oh and the inside of this place is SO cute!
